Important Note:

The exam reflects various project environments and approaches. About half will be predictive, and the other half will be agile or hybrid. These approaches are integrated across all three domains.

PMP Eligibility Requirements

Project management experience must be accrued within the last eight consecutive years.

Educational Background Project Management Experience
Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or global equivalent) Minimum five years/60 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience
OR Four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or global equivalent) Minimum three years/36 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience
OR Bachelor’s or post-graduate degree from a GAC accredited program Minimum two years/24 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience

Experience must include leading and directing projects.

Additionally:

  • At least 35 contact hours of formal project management education are required, unless you are an active CAPM holder.
  • GAC accredited program graduates receive a 12-month work experience credit and can use coursework to fulfill the 35 education hours.

How to Record Your Experience & Education

Number of Months of Project Management Experience:

  • Record experience in months, not number of projects.
  • Experience must be in a professional setting; school projects or personal events do not qualify.
  • Non-overlapping experience counts (e.g., if you worked on Project A Jan-Apr and Project B May-Jun, it’s 6 months, not 4+2).

Contact Hours of Project Management Education:

  • Verify at least 35 contact hours of specific instruction.
  • One hour of classroom instruction equals one contact hour.
  • Only hours directly spent on project management content count.
  • Coursework must be completed by the time of application submission.
  • Content may include project quality, scope, schedule, budget, communications, risk, procurement, cost, resources, stakeholder, and integration management.

Note:

You cannot record an entire degree program if only a portion applies to the project management requirement.

Approved Education Providers & Exclusions

Education Requirements can be satisfied by:

  • PMI Authorized Training Partners (ATPs)
  • PMI chapters (if learning activity is conducted)
  • Employer/company-sponsored programs
  • Training companies or consultants
  • Distance-learning companies (with end-of-course assessment)
  • University/college academic and continuing education programs

The following do NOT satisfy requirements:

  • PMI chapter meetings (unless learning activity is conducted for at least one hour)
  • Self-directed learning (e.g., reading books, watching instructional videos without end-of-course assessment)

Application Processing:

Online applications typically process in 5 calendar days, unless selected for audit.

PMP Certification Fees

  • Fees are subject to regional and membership pricing rules.
  • Membership is NOT required to obtain the PMP.
  • Initial examination fees are paid after application approval.
  • Retake exam: Substantial discount if eligibility period is current.
  • Cancellation/No-show fees may apply if exam date is confirmed and scheduled.
  • Manual hand score fee: $45 USD (for paper-based administration).
  • Renewing PMP Certification requires a payment based on regional and membership pricing rules.
  • Supported currencies: USD, Euros, BRL, INR.
  • Accepted payment methods: Credit card and wire transfer.
  • Reexamination fees are waived for candidates whose scores were invalidated due to data forensics evidence.

Time Allotment:

230 Minutes

You may take less than the allotted time.

Breaks:

  • Two 10-minute breaks.
  • First break after questions 1-60.
  • Second break after questions 120.
  • Cannot return to previous section after starting a break.
  • Tutorial and survey (5-15 mins) are optional and not included in exam time.

Retaking the Exam

  • Encouraged to continue study and retake if first attempt fails.
  • May take the examination up to three times within your one-year eligibility period.
  • After three attempts, you must wait one year from the date of the last examination before reapplying.
  • This policy upholds exam security and reduces overexposure of questions.
  • During the one-year waiting period, you can apply for any other PMI certification.
  • If your one-year eligibility period expires without passing, you must reapply for the certification.
